Student reports robbery, sexual assault
Duke Police are investigating an alleged robbery and sexual assault that took place two weeks ago near Wannamaker and Chapel drives on West Campus.
A female Duke student said she was approached by a man around 10 p.m. Nov. 16. She said the suspect took cash, the student’s DukeCard and committed a second-degree sexual offense. The suspect was described as a black male, 5-feet-11-inches tall and 28 to 30 years old.
The student submitted an anonymous report on Nov. 23 to another campus office, who then shared the report with Duke Police.
Upon being notified, DUPD immediately began an investigation, although the lapse of time and anonymous report will make it harder to identify the suspect, said Assistant Chief Gloria Graham.
“If someone reports a crime at 3 a.m., an investigator would be called and we’d start work right then,” Graham said. “In this instance, we weren’t able to process the crime scene by setting up a perimeter and conducting a search, which greatly increases the probability of solving the crime.”
Graham said that reports can also be made anonymously to Duke Police through its “Silent Witness” program on the Duke Police website.
