Statement Regarding Shooting Outside Duke Hospital

Editors: Duke University Police have issued the following statement regarding a shooting that occurred earlier this (Saturday) morning. Duke Police Chief John Dailey is available to answer questions about the incident. The Police Department number is (919) 684-2444.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday morning, two Duke University Police Officers were involved in a shooting outside the front entrance of Duke University Hospital.  The shooting resulted in a fatality and there is no immediate indication that this involved an employee, patient or patient family member.

We can’t comment on any details related to the situation pending further investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation and the Duke University Police Department.

There has been no interruption of patient care services or hospital operations.  However, to facilitate the ongoing investigation, access to the primary entrance to Duke University Hospital is currently restricted and employees and visitors will temporarily be routed to an alternate entrance to the facility.

There is no ongoing safety or security issue at Duke University Hospital as this was an isolated incident that occurred outside of the facility.
