Police investigating strong arm robbery off campus

October 13, 2010A Duke student reported having her backpack taken by force Wednesday morning off campus on LaSalle Street.

John Dailey, chief of Duke Police, said the student was walking on LaSalle Street near Campus Walk Avenue at 10 a.m. when an unknown woman approached her and asked to borrow her cell phone.  The woman pushed the student to the ground and grabbed the backpack, he said.

The woman climbed into a silver four door vehicle and drove away with the student’s cell phone and backpack, Dailey said. The student’s credit card was used a short time later at a gas station in Durham. The student was not injured and walked to campus, where she called police.
