A Duke University graduate student was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday evening near East Campus. No one was injured.

The incident occurred at 7:19 p.m. as the 26-year-old student walked on Sedgefield Street near the intersection of West Markham Avenue, said John Dailey, Duke’s chief of police.

The man approached the student holding a small handgun and demanded the student’s backpack, police said. The man then fled with the backpack toward Green Street.

Police encourage Duke community members to consider these and other safety precautions:

•    If a person confronts you and demands money or possessions, comply with the request – do not resist.
•    Record serial numbers of personal electronics to assist in the recovery of stolen items.

The city of Durham Police Department is investigating the robbery.
