Man Arrested in Connection with Bomb Threats to Duke

October 05, 2011Officers from the Duke University and Durham Police departments have arrested a 20-year-old Durham man in connection with phoning in bomb threats to Duke's campus Oct. 1.

Renaldo Sinclair Webbe of 1209 Jackson St. was charged Wednesday with making a false bomb report and making a false report of mass violence on educational property, both felonies, according to arrest warrants.

Webbe is accused of phoning in false reports about explosives in the Bryan Center on West Campus, according to the warrants. Those calls prompted officials to evacuate the Bryan Center for a couple of hours, during which time police, aided by a bomb-sniffing dog, thoroughly searched the building before determining the call was a hoax.

Webbe is a temporary employee of McDonald's in the Bryan Center, police said.

"The Duke University Police Department has worked closely with the Raleigh Police Department and Durham Police Department to investigate this case," said Kyle Cavanaugh, emergency coordinator and vice president for administration at Duke. "Calling in a bomb threat has serious consequences, and we're pleased to have brought this investigation to a close so quickly."
