Crime Tracking & Analysis

The Duke University Police Department uses state-of-the-art technology to track and analyze crime patterns and to adjust patrols to address patterns.

The department uses CompStat, a crime reduction management tool introduced and used by the New York City Police Department. The program allows Duke to pinpoint specific problems and areas of concern, so officers can address them in a timely, efficient and comprehensive manner.

If departments or individuals have concerns or are experiencing problems, they can contact Duke police to request an analysis of a specific issue or location. For example, if there’s a spike in the number of thefts in a residence hall, Duke Police can adjust patrolling and implement other safety precautions, such as notifying students and employees who frequent the area.
